The Panthers have released Pro Bowl fullback Mike Tolbert, the team announced Tuesday.

In a move to clear cap space, Carolina decided to drop the 31-year-old, who has been with the team since 2012.

“You start to wonder, what the hell is going on here?” Cooley said on ESPN 980-AM, via the Washington Post. :And I start to look at this and say, ‘Do we not trust what Scot McCloughan is going to say to the media, and is that why he’s not allowed to talk to the media?’ And if we don’t trust what he’s going to say to the media, why don’t we trust what he’s going to say to the media?

“Now, if you look at the history of Scot McCloughan, I think the one thing that you’d immediately start to flush out as to why we don’t trust what he’s going to say is that he’s had a drinking problem over his entire career. And so you ask right away, is he drinking?”

McCloughan’s problems with alcohol were part of the reason he lost his job as the 49ers’ GM in 2010.

Cooley, who is currently a radio host in D.C., then speculated with his co-host Kevin Sheehan that McCloughan could also be keeping silent to stop leaks to the media.

“I would say the guys you have questions on, guys that you need to dig deeper on, you’re always better off just saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to do a quick hello greeting at the Combine, put our toe in the water and then make sure this player is one of the 30 we want Troy Polamalu Cheap Jerseys to bring to our facility.’ You can then have him go around to a lot of different people to be interviewed so you get a little better picture of what that player is all about.”

By that time, too, players will know what a team is about through the Combine interview process and whether they even want to accept the invitation.
